CCA Archer Aims for the Olympics

CCA Archer Aims for the Olympics

8-May-2018–North Fort Myers, Fla. — It’s a sunny day in Southwest Florida, and several Classical Christian Academy students eagerly line up on the wall with bows in hand. Under Mr. Rich Davis’ guidance, the students practice and improve their skills during every class. Archery students are taught to encourage each other, work hard and have fun.

“Archery is learning to have fun while persevering and doing the hard things,” says Mr. Davis, the longtime archery instructor for Classical Christian Academy. Mr. Davis says he got his first bow from his parents. He learned the basics from his father, later moving on to train under the instruction of advanced archers willing to give their time to help him perfect his techniques.

One student in particular in Mr. Davis’ class is very passionate about archery, and she aims to compete in the 2024 Summer Olympics. CCA Senior Emma Ravish has been taking part in archery for seven years, having first been inspired by her classes with Mr. Davis at CCA.

“In the past three to four years, I realized I was potentially good enough to compete, and I picked up a recurve bow, which is the bow they use in the Olympic Games,” she says. “I enjoy the focus it takes to go through the steps while shooting. There are so many things I love about archery, but the challenge is what really makes it fun.”

Mr. Davis says he believes Emma will achieve her dreams. “Emma is the most blessed and gifted archer I have ever seen, both mentally and physically. Her focus has always been there, but her confidence has grown because of the success she has had due to the hard work she has put in.”

Emma practices archery outside of school, too, but she says that CCA has benefited her the most — academically, spiritually, and especially in her archery training. “The teachers are great and want you to succeed. They help you on a personal level. Archery class has taught me how to focus and work hard.”

Emma says she has many things she needs to do upon graduation. “To get to the Olympics, I need to master my equipment, work in competitions to get noticed, and then enter a World Cup archery tournament.”

Mr. Davis says these things are achievable. “I believe God wants Emma to be the best archer she can be for the Glory of His Kingdom. She has everything it takes to be successful at the highest level, and I’ve been blessed to get to watch.”

Emma will continue to compete to obtain her goal to participate in the 2024 Olympics, and she says, “If it is God’s will, then it will happen.”

As for the other students, they do archery as a fun hobby to learn strength and perseverance, and how to focus on the important things. After each class, more students begin to hit the bullseye, but most importantly, they carry the lessons they learn with them throughout their whole life.
