CCA Students Help Children through Make-A-Wish
Three CCA students helped grant the wishes of children with life-threatening conditions as members of the Make-A-Wish Youth Leadership Committee.
8- May-2017 — North Fort Myers , Fla. — Three students at Classical Christian Academy — Emily D., Naomi I. and Riley S. — took part in the Make-A-Wish Youth Leadership Committee (YLC) during the 2016-17 school year and raised a collective $1,900 to help grant the wishes of children with life threatening illnesses.
YLC offers an opportunity for students in 7th through 12th grade to learn about fundraising for a charitable cause. It also teaches them life skills such as how to talk to people and work in groups. These students collaborated to raise as much money as they can for Make-A-Wish SouthWest Florida Chapter.
“YLC works as a committee to help promote Make-A-Wish within the Southwest Florida community to raise awareness and funds which allow us to grant more local wishes,” explained YLC Director Taylor Marini.
There are 53 students in the SouthWest Florida chapter, representing many schools in the area. CCA got involved after Ms. Marini visited the school at the end of the 2015-16 school year. Mrs. Shannon Schram’s Eighth Grade Logic class had done a fundraiser to benefit Make-A-Wish and was presenting the check.
“I helped create the connection between Make-A-Wish and CCA, but the students who are a part of the Leadership Committee did so on their own,” said Mrs. Schram, who served as a mentor for Emily and Riley.

All 53 of the youth leaders on the committee were required to create their own personal fundraisers. Riley and Emily decided to team up for a fundraiser at CCA, while Naomi organized her own series of fundraising events related to her musical performance. They all had the same goal: to help children with life threatening illnesses.
“I am using my gifts (singing/entertaining) to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Leadership Committee,” said Naomi, who is a graduating senior and a professional musician in the Southwest Florida area. She established several different venues and dates for the month of January. As she performed, she would ask listeners to donate to Make-A-Wish.

“My family has always made it a priority to be involved in some sort of organization to help others,” Naomi said. Her fundraisers took a lot of planning and hard work, and she was able to raise $1,500!
Emily and Riley organized a Candy Grams sale at CCA. Students were able to purchase candy bars and send them to friends, teachers and staff with a special message to show how much they are appreciated. Candy Grams were handed out at lunch time on the day before Valentine’s Day. This fundraiser made $400 for Make-A-Wish!
“I have always desired to do something to help people, and Make-a Wish has helped me do so,” said Riley. “I believe the Youth Leadership Committee is definitely helping me get out of my comfort zone. I have learned how to talk to many different people. I have learned the difficult tasks involved with fundraising, and I’m excited to increase my skills as I keep learning.”
Emily served as secretary of the YLC Executive Board.
“Make-A-Wish Leadership Committee is teaching me skills that are adaptable to any career choice, such as organization, leadership and communication,” she said.
