Students Enjoy New Experiences through CCA Field Trips

Field trips allow Classical Christian Academy students to learn about space, science, wildlife and sea creatures.

CCA Field Trips

5-May-2017 — North Fort Myers, Fla. — CCA had some exciting and interesting field trips this year, including Mote Marine Aquarium, the Museum Of Science and Industry (MOSI), Lion Country Safari and Kennedy Space Center. Students and their families had fun exploring these destinations!

The most recent field trip to Kennedy Space Center allowed CCA families the opportunity to learn about how the United States space program is changing, such as how they are now trying to send people to Mars. At the Kennedy Space Center, they have on display the Space Shuttle Atlantis and the Apollo 8. They also have a simulator so you can experience what it would be like taking off on Space Shuttle Atlantis to the International Space Center. In the Kennedy Space Center gift shop, some students purchased items like meteor fragments, astronaut figurines, autographed memorabilia and freeze-dried astronaut ice cream.

About 80 to 150 people went on each field trip. Each trip was carefully planned by Fifth Grade Teacher Mrs. Tabitha Dillehay.

“We like to look at what we study in history and science and base our field trips off of that,” she said.

The first field trip of the year was to Mote Marine in Sarasota in September. Each age group (elementary, middle and high school) got to participate in a different hands-on activity. The high school students got to go wading in the estuary to find organisms and marine life. Middle school did a simulated rescue to see how biologists help injured marine animals. Elementary students learned how dolphins adapt to their environment.

“I liked the the aquarium field trip because I saw some cool sharks!” said ninth grader Miranda W.

MOSI in Tampa was the second field trip, happening in November. A highlight for the younger students was when they got to make slime and learn about the chemical reaction that happens to the ingredients.

“We learned that robots are being developed to help people,” said eighth grader Laura V.

Lion Country Safari was the third field trip in February. The highlight of that trip was a safari ride in group vans to view many different animals like rhinos, giraffes and antelope. A friendly/aggressive ostrich pecked at the windows of each van!

CCA Field Trips

The last trip to Kennedy Space Center was very educational. There were 3D films to show our amazing planet from space and to show how astronauts live on the International Space Station. The following day, several CCA families visited nearby Fort Christmas. They had on display some old gear from the Seminole Wars such as muskets, flags and uniforms. They also had a 1908 school house and a cafeteria from about 1932. At noon, there was a weaponry show in the fort.

“I learned that the Scouts have two different uniforms, and also saw special flags and artifacts,” said CCA History Teacher Mrs. Delina Caldwell.

Mrs. Dillehay revealed some new field trip destinations that are being planned for next school year. These include Lowry Park Zoo and Legoland!

“CCA is a great school with great staff and teachers that work hard to organize field trips for students so we can have fun while learning at different destinations,” said sixth grader Jack P.
