Teacher Tuesday: Donna Jennings
Sometimes wonderful things come from unique places. When first speaking to Mrs. Donna Jennings, it’s not clear that she comes from a tropical island. Mrs. Jennings has been at CCA for five years and teaches second grade. When she was in second grade herself, Mrs. Jennings was attending school with her three older siblings in Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas. She grew up in a place where the best treatment for the common cold was a dip in the ocean. She didn’t have string cheese or chicken nuggets for an after school snack, it was Bahamian staples like conch fritters or pigeon peas and rice. When she was in 10th grade, Mrs. Jennings left the steel drums and crystal clear waters of Nassau and moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She attended Flagler College in St. Augustine and studied Elementary Education and Education of the Hearing Impaired. Her work with the hearing impaired led her to meet her husband, Mr. Chris Jennings, another CCA teacher.

She supports her husband at their church, Calvary Chapel Cape Coral and leads Bible studies and women’s retreats with their church members. Mrs. Jennings is also a mom to her two kids, Josh and Christine. Christine graduated from CCA last year! Mrs. Jennings has worked at different Christian schools in Fort Myers but CCA is her favorite place to be.
Mrs. Jennings and her students
“I love the hybrid model and the Christian atmosphere,” she says. Second grade is Mrs. Jennings’ favorite grade to teach. She loves to see students who were just starting school in kindergarten just a few years ago, grow and blossom into strong learners. Every year, Mrs. Jennings and her students read The Littles by John Peterson and they work together to build a replica of the small home the characters lived in. “I love seeing how each class comes up with a different design each year.” She says. Her students this year built a great home for the Littles.

In addition to teaching second grade, Mrs. Jennings also teaches our sign language elective. Kindergartners gather into her classroom each week and learn how to communicate God’s love in a brand new way. They learn how to spell their name, the days of the week and more.
For the past five years, Mrs. Jennings has served CCA families by teaching her students to love God and serve Him in all they do. Her journey from the Bahamas to our unique hybrid school is a special story and we are so grateful to have her on our team!
